In this interview with W.R. Mitchell (WRM), Marie Hartley (MH) and Joan Ingilby (JI) reminisce about life in the Dales from the 1920s onwards. Marie Hartley describes the use of backcans to milk cows outdoors.

Marie Hartley became interested in the Yorkshire Dales when she went on walking holidays in the 1920s with Ella Pontefract. Later they would visit with their caravan, taking a week or two to travel across the Dales. During these trips they would collect items which can now be seen in the Dales Countryside Museum.

Alice Maunders, Full Transcript

Alice Maunders (AM) was interviewed by W.R. Mitchell (WRM) many times. In her interview in 1988, Alice discusses a number of photos of the Proctor family taken in the early 20th century. She then describes starting work as an Inbetween Maid at the McEvoys' house in Stackhouse and explains working conditions in large houses between the Wars. Alice also describes her husband John Maunders's role as an apprentice hairdresser and her own role as a hairdresser.
