W.R. ‘Bill’ Mitchell has written many books and articles on local and social history, but he is also a naturalist, and has written extensively about the Dales and Cumbrian flora and fauna under the names ‘W.R. Mitchell’ and a pseudonym, John North. Under the name John North he wrote for The Craven Herald and The Dalesman.

Bill Mitchell's lifetime interest in bird watching led to his many books on the subject—'A Year in the Life of the Curlew', 'A Passion for Puffins', 'Birds of the Scottish Highlands', amongst others. He is a member of the British Deer Society, The Yorkshire Naturalist Trust, the Cumbrian Wild Life Trust, and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and he was a founder member of the Royal Naval Bird Watching Society.
